Not just scared, either. The main reason why kids cry on planes, especially during takeoff and landing, is an inability to depressurize their middle ear space. Their smaller Eustachian tubes make it even more difficult than for adults to adjust to these pressure changes, and it can often lead to excruciating discomfort.

So yeah...one more reason why that guy is a dick.

I was in excruciating pain when on a plane at the age of 5 or so. Seriously thought I would die and was screaming myself.

Now I hardly qualify it as discomforting when my ears get plugged on a flight.

I'm pretty sure a grown man slapping the infant of a complete stranger across the face is indeed an incident and an issue. But then again the guy did call the baby a n*gger so I'm sure he's good in your book.
