The culinary union. They hold a lot more sway than you would think due to their large membership. The Fertitta's run non-unionized casions in Las Vegas. The culinary union hates this, and has been using their large influence in NY politics for years to keep MMA from being passed in the state.

I hope it doesn't get legalized there and Jersey takes over as the local mma hotbed.

It was made illegal in the "human cockfighting" panic, and until the last few years there hasn't been a sustained push to get it back. So that jackwad Assembly member was able to (fairly easily) squash it.

Add the culinary union and the fact that there's been a ton of 'urgent' stuff going on and they've been able to shelve it without a vote.

As I recall, it's pretty well believed that if it ever gets a vote, it will pass.

Why on earth would you wish that????

Dude, I live here and it has been that way for years and it's fvcking annoying, especially for my instructor when he was a pro fighter and all the fighters we know from NY state.

They all have to travel to Jersey anytime they want to compete and it's frustrating.

I am surprised you didn't know that Jersey is already a hot bed for MMA in the North East??

The Miller Brothers camp (AMA) and many other camps are there, Frankie Edgar is from Jersey, and many MMA orgs are there like Ring of Combat and others.

But why should they have to travel to another state to fight??

    It sucks.

Yeah, it used to be that way here. One of the reasons I never got a fight. Wasn't legal until I was damn near 30.

Only reason I say that I hope it doesn't is because I think the entire situation is ****ing silly and I could really care less. I'm tired of hearing about it and I'm tired of hearing about people getting all pissy because of it.

Well, you would be pissy about it too if you lived here.

People who don't live here really have no reason to care, but we New Yorkers do.

And it's silly which is EXACTLY WHY IT SHOULD BE LEGALIZED.

And it will be, it will be legal in all 50 states (I think there are only 4 including NY, Conn and 2 others I'm not sure of where it's still illegal), it's just a matter of time.
