Who are 'they', and what is 'the distinction'?
BMI is a ratio involving only two variables: height and weight. If your height and weight don't change, neither does your BMI. So for your BMI to drastically drop without losing weight, the only option is to get drastically taller.
This. It's not about grains or dairy specifically. It's about quantity.
We still consume the same number of calories we did 300 years ago. Yet in those days, the majority of us were not professional ass sitters, doing our "work" virtually and mentally.
So if you took in 6,000 calories a day, but during that day you were taming the environment, tending the fields, etc, you were burning those calories. We burn half that on average now, and need to cut back our portions in the same way.
Also, a huge issue is what we drink. I think I read that half our calories come from beverages now, where it used to be closer to 10%.

I agree about drinks. Juice and Pop are terrible (admittedly struggle with diet coke addiction) with absolutely no redeemable value. Calories in/ Calories out is a tired method too. Not all calories are created equal

My daily intake:
7am: 100%whey optimum gold standard 1 scoop, with 1 apple, orange, banana, blueberries, nectarines and spinach mixed in a blender for breakfast.
Noon: chicken breast, brown rice, broccoli, peas.
3pm: banana, almonds, and 32oz of water.
6pm: dinner: 6oz steak, brown rice, broccoli, black beans.
9pm: post workout meal: breakfast protein shake + multivitamin+ 2 fish oil+ calcium + vitamin d3 because I live in sunless PA.
10pm. Sleep, getting at least 8-9 hours.
Boom.
