Because they are one of the few big enough to organize such office campaigns, with the requisite accountants to keep your employers payroll legal. Your local homeless shelter couldn't handle the reporting requirements.

I usually do not give to any big charity, but instead I always try to support any local organization that I know is in need. I wish I could say I still do this but once upon a time I organized an all expense paid trip to a Pirates game for 30 area kids. It was pretty bad ass. We raised the money by selling hoagies and shirts of the event. Area businesses all helped out by either donating $$ or supplies. I did this 2 times in 04 and 06 and I still have kids come up to me and thank me or talk about the trip. The Pirates gave all of the kids a free hat and had their name/picture on the scoreboard. I'll probably never top that as far as good deeds go.

And from what I understand, only about 5% of their income actually goes towards charity.
I decided these guys would never get another dime from me once I read a story where a volunteer who was sorting donated toys at Christmas was instructed to throw all of the Harry Potter and Twilight toys in the garbage because they promoted black magic. If they can afford to just throw away perfectly good toys, then they have more than enough money in the first place.
