Thread: Best Announcing Job?

    Default Best Announcing Job?

To pass the time at work I've been watching WrestleMania 4. Or rather, I am listening to it. This forces me to really pay attention to the job that Monsoon and Jesse Ventura are doing. I really love the banter and way that they call action. It was at a time when the announcers took more care to focus on the minutia, particularly Gorilla. There is a sense nowadays that this is more of entertainment than sport which I dislike. Also, there is more of advancing the show vs. the match in front of them. Just my opinion.

Does anyone have a specific event that they thought was called well, top to bottom?

Monsoon and Heenan are the best commentary team I've ever heard...Fed off each other even better than Monsoon and Ventura...Their best performance...Probably Royal Rumble 92, which I think is part of the reason it's the best Rumble ever

And why in the hell would you torture yourself by watching Wrestlemania 4...that damn thing is a chore to get through

Two matches that I thought were called terrifically are Austin vs. HHH at No Way Out 2001 and of course Undertaker vs. Mankind at King of the Ring 98. Ross was selling everything the four of them did to put those matches over.

One of the biggest reasons I think some of the new stars didn't get over like they should have is because Ross and Lawler just didn't sell for them. If you are constantly running guys down or not really putting over their work as announcers, it is harder for the casual fan to take them seriously.

Ross loved all of those guys at the time of those matches, and he did everything possible to make them sound super human in. He honestly did a great job.

I think it was ECW Heatwave '98 that completely sold me on Joey Styles and the concept of a one-man announce team.

In the middle of the ppv, they showed the pre-taped Singapore Cane match between Sandman and Sabu, much to Joey Styles protest, I bought in completely. He got in a shouting match with Paul E. on the air about censors....brilliant.

I was on dailymotion and it was the first thing that came up. They have tons on there. I just watched the ultimate warrior and road warriors docs there.

I would have said Heenan and Monsoon before but looking back I sometimes wonder if the Weasel cracked wise a hair too much. He was the heel announcer of course but it would have been nice for him to step back once in awhile.

Wasn't Cyrus called Jackel in WWF? Or am I thinking of someone else?
