View Full Version : Best Announcing Job?

To pass the time at work I've been watching WrestleMania 4. Or rather, I am listening to it. This forces me to really pay attention to the job that Monsoon and Jesse Ventura are doing. I really love the banter and way that they call action. It was at a time when the announcers took more care to focus on the minutia, particularly Gorilla. There is a sense nowadays that this is more of entertainment than sport which I dislike. Also, there is more of advancing the show vs. the match in front of them. Just my opinion.
Does anyone have a specific event that they thought was called well, top to bottom?

Monsoon and Heenan are the best commentary team I've ever heard...Fed off each other even better than Monsoon and Ventura...Their best performance...Probably Royal Rumble 92, which I think is part of the reason it's the best Rumble ever
And why in the hell would you torture yourself by watching Wrestlemania 4...that damn thing is a chore to get through
Two matches that I thought were called terrifically are Austin vs. HHH at No Way Out 2001 and of course Undertaker vs. Mankind at King of the Ring 98. Ross was selling everything the four of them did to put those matches over.
One of the biggest reasons I think some of the new stars didn't get over like they should have is because Ross and Lawler just didn't sell for them. If you are constantly running guys down or not really putting over their work as announcers, it is harder for the casual fan to take them seriously.
Ross loved all of those guys at the time of those matches, and he did everything possible to make them sound super human in. He honestly did a great job.

I think it was ECW Heatwave '98 that completely sold me on Joey Styles and the concept of a one-man announce team.
In the middle of the ppv, they showed the pre-taped Singapore Cane match between Sandman and Sabu, much to Joey Styles protest, I bought in completely. He got in a shouting match with Paul E. on the air about censors....brilliant.

I was on dailymotion and it was the first thing that came up. They have tons on there. I just watched the ultimate warrior and road warriors docs there.
I would have said Heenan and Monsoon before but looking back I sometimes wonder if the Weasel cracked wise a hair too much. He was the heel announcer of course but it would have been nice for him to step back once in awhile.

"Joel 'Just like the Rubix Cube, the more you play with it, the harder it gets' Gertner"
"Ladies and Gentlemen the following matchup scheduled for 1 fall with a 15 minute time limit, and your referee is bald"
"The quintessential studmuffin, the man whose wit is more tongue in cheek than a lesbian orgy, Joel 'The man whose phone number is on your girlfriend's speed-dial, because she loves the way I sixty-nine her' Gertner"
Damn I loved me some Joel Gertner. What the hell happened to that guy?

Heenan and Gorilla are the all time best IMO. Just hearing their voices together brings back great nostalgic memories.
For some reason, Schivone and Zybyzko put me to sleep. Always have, something about the tones of their voices.

I'm old.
Gordon f'n Solie was the man.
Gorilla and Ventura were awsome. Heenan was great, but could get too over the top.
Honorable mention to Jim Ross who really grew into the role. Lawler is a good commentary guy, but like Heenan sometime goes to far for a joke.
I used to watch ECW matches on Mute because Styles annoyed me so much.

I agree with the going too far in terms of detracting from the action. I don't think they were/are out of bounds in terms of taste but their jokes could get tiresome.
I was listening to Ventura and Gorilla talking about wrestlers being greased up and how that can actually be a detriment because it clogs the pores. Just stupid little tidbits like that to create the sense that the world of pro wrestling extended beyond the ring were invaluable.

Joel Gertner was the best and a truly hilarious Ring announcer, but he wasn't that great at the play by play/colour commentary....
Just IMO, of course...

Yeah, Jesse and Monsoon were the best imo.
I also liked Jesse and Vince and think they dont get enough props for the good work they did together.
