Despite my love for swimming my biggest fear is open water and the only reason is that I watched Jaws when I was way too young and cannot shake off the mental image of that big ****ing shark mouth coming out the water. I reckon that's a reasonable fear though, anyone got anything more ridiculous?

I have always been terrified of spiders.
My true biggest fear, though, is losing someone close to me. My mom died when I was 19, and I can't go through that again.

Tornado's. It was irrational, but when I was thirteen I had two cousins who's homes were destroyed by tornado's. I saw first hand the devastation. So then I was afraid that every thunderstorm that passed would produce a tornado. This fear lasted up until 5 years ago, when it just suddenly vanished. No idea why or how, but I'm no longer gripped by the fear that every storm is gonna produce a twister and I'll be killed.
Edit: also due to this fear studying meteorology has become a hobby.

I have an irrational fear of ladders. Hate climbing them, and my legs start to shake. Even little step ladders. I would rather step on anything else than a ladder.
I still climb them, b/c I hate the fact that I get so nervous on them, but my legs are often shaking.

Yeah sharks. I love swimming in the ocean but I get petrified of swimming out further than about 100 feet. Im afraid i'll bleed to death before making it to shore if I go out further. For some reason, though, I love fear. Alot of times I ride my bike up to the beach at sunset, chain the bike and sprint as fast as I can to the water, than swim as fast as I can , straight out to sea until I'm exhausted and have to take a break. As soon as i get upright, kick my legs out and feel no bottom, I feel utter panic. I swim back, probably crying, extremely pissed at myself and utterly convinced a shark is about to strike.
but that feeling when I reach the beach and collapse from exhaustion is such a fantastic feeling, grateful to be alive, completely satisfied, and proud of myself for facing my fear.
But I've not been able to conquer the fear. When I was 10, I would swim out in the ocean all day, knowing that sharks existed and not caring. I was more of a man and less of a ***** at ten years old. back the I would swim so far out that it took half an hour just to get back. What the **** happened to me?

Exactly the same for me but only the coming down part. I sometimes think about jumping off the roof instead of the ladder it is so bad. "i should jump I could land there and roll and it won't be that bad"

My single biggest fear:
Heights, even though I bungee jump, pendulum swing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B2kpNx6J6Y), and have sky dived(and am planning on getting my ticket),
and climb old growth trees. It takes me days of mental preparation for the task, and just thinking about it in my mind's eye gets my stomach all tied up.
As a kid I was a pure playground ninja, me and my bro were the best in the neighbourhood at running on top of the park apparatus'. But I once fell about 50 feet from the side
of an overpass onto concrete. Somehow I barely hurt myself, but I developed an irrational fear of heights that took me years to even come close to master.
I still haven't defeated it, but I can control it now.

I think as adults, we get caught up with actually thinking about consequences. I remember being a kid and my brothers and I would all walk about 2 miles behind my parents house to this big lake. We'd swim in that thing for hours. It was infested with gators. I remember opening my eyes underwater a few times and seeing gators swimming about. Back then, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I just figured we were all enjoying a nice swim on a warm Florida day.
Now that I'm an adult, there's no way in hell I'd swim in a lake if I knew there were gators close by.

Easily anything happening to my munchkins. Terrified of it. I even have a hard time leaving them with their Grandma so the wife and I can get a night out because I'm not there to defend them if some psycho/pedo tries to break down the door.
The weird thing is when I was single/no kids I didn't really have any fears that would lock me up like people are talking about in this thread. But now with all the responsibility with family/work I'm always thinking of the worse case scenarios.
Sigh.
Growing up/old with responsibilities is a bitch.

Needles and spiders for me. Spiders for the same reasons others have said needles however I'm unsure why. I'm so bad with needles that I have literally cracked nurses for showing them to me. When I need surgeries they have to hit me with Valium to calm me down. The weird part of needles though is that I can give blood no problem

There are a couple of reasons I don't want children. One is that at this moment in time I couldn't think of anything worse, to be honest the thought of kids are right up there with the giant shark. Two is that if I did have them I'd be afraid to ever leave their side with the amount of evil in the world and I'd probably be on the phone to them every two minutes if they weren't with me. It would just stress me out.

Planes. Also heights when it involves other people. It sounds strange but on spring break in south padre two years ago i saw a kid fall 9 flights of a balcony and die. Seeing people on balconys now in general trips me the **** out.

Don't worry, once this thread is more than 4 months old, you're guaranteed to bring it ttt somewhere between 3 and 5am.

Confined spaces, open water (I went snorkelling in Mexico on a tour in a group and even then I was freaking out a bit at first), and definitely spiders that have big ass bodies with fur on them.

Going through this thread I had to think hard about what I really fear. Either because my life is too mundane or I'm just fortunate.
I enjoy public speaking, because I know most of you ****ers can't do it or it makes you piss your pants. :)
Love to fly, because of the stark reality of it. If the plane crashes I'm gonna die so I'm not going to dwell on it since plane crashes are fairly infrequent. It's like a thrill ride during take off and landing and the rest is boring. Turbulence can bring the tension, but it has to be pretty bad and that doesn't happen much.
I'm very tolerant of heights, I enjoy the thrill actually. That feeling deep inside when you're clearly in a precarious spot. I won't climb a scyscraper with suction cups but heights are cool.
Spiders? I don't like spiders, but I don't fear them. You go all lesnar on em if they are in your space, but they kill insects so I can rationalize the deal there.
Water, swimming and diving are cool as hell. I may feel differently if my swimming skills were non-existant, but I know my limits in open water and stick to it.
I really really really want to live as long as I ****ing can, several hundred years would be nice, but I rarely ever think about death so thats a bonus.
Losing loved ones, especially my kids is the thing I think I fear most. My boys are very active teenagers and I know the **** I did and they are exposed to even more. My oldest kid is known for having a Liddel-esque looping overhand right and uses it often because he won't back down from anyone. My youngest is starting to push the envelope now and will probably find as much trouble as any other young man. Good thing is they are good kids and pretty sharp. But the times where I've seen them hurt and the times I know will come where they are hurt again is something that weighs heavily on me. I really do fear that kind of stuff.

Amen.
I'm not scared of dying. The way I see it, if the theists are right, I've been a good guy and will have some sort of eternal reward. If the athiests are right, I'll simply cease to exist, as will all my worries, cares, stresses, etc.
But certain types of pain scare me. While I stopped boxing after realizing that I'd rather not get punched in the face repeatedly, it doesn't scare me. But needles, bee stings, etc...petrify me.
it's ok, mine would be air supply...
There's nothing wrong with Air Supply. Being able to play that **** on an accoustic guitar got me laid more than once.
