Goligoski reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Saturday, February 07, 2009
By Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Penguins today reassigned rookie defenseman Alex Goligoski to their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm team.
Goligoski, 23, had been with the Penguins all season. He had six goals -- tops among NHL rookie defensemen -- and 20 points in 44 games but has been a healthy scratch nine of the past 15 games, including the past two.

One of the few Defensemen that are actually worth a damn and they ship him off. I guess the Pens are going for the highest pick possible.

I heard they were shopping Whitney, too. Apparently, they're looking to add another forward. WTF is going on in Pittsburgh?

I ask myself that almost every day. Its so confusing. Its like they don't know what to do anymore.
Shero said that he wasn't going to trade anyone and then all these trade rumors pop up. He said that he wasn't going to shitcan Theiren. What the fuck does he think is going to happen? That magically everything will be ok? That Miroslav Satan will suddenly score 4 goals a game? That Fedotenko will be worth a damn. Jesus Christ man....its fucking depressing.

Yeah I thought the goligoski move was terrible, he has been playing well and to send an offensively productive defenseman to the minors when your struggling for offense is retarded.
As for shopping whitney I also dont like that move. I believe he has a pretty high price tag but outside of that I am very happy with him overall. What the pens need is some size and GRITT. Outside of malkin and staal they dont have any forwards with any size or grit, and both malkin and staal arent exactly oozing toughness. I would like to see the pens get rid of kennedy/fedotenko/talbot (while i love talbot and liked resigning him he wouldnt be missed on the ice) and try to pick up a foward with some size and toughness. I loved the pairing of malkin crosby and cook, if the pens could pick up a scott hartnell type I think it would really help to pick up some of the ugly goals that they are desperatlet lacking

the Penguins are going into the pits...
like seriously... they are going to be garbage for a couple of years...
they put too much value in Crosby/Malkin... and neglected the fact that guys like Roberts, Malone, Christianson were all very important players as well... not to mention Conklin

They are really missing Malone and Roberts. Christianson was ok.
Definitely Conklin too. I think he wanted more money than we could afford to pay a back up. Also, no one thought Fluery would be like this this year.

i didn't think he would be this bad... but I did believe that Fluery was a greatly overrated goalie in the league

Honestly, Therrien is a huge problem. He just can not motivate this team. They should have NO PROBLEM coming out inspired to play Detroit, and they got walked yesterday. Whitney gets paid way too much, and is what like -12 now? Goligoski gets sent down, and he leads all defensemen with 20 points and a +5 rating. And hasn'teven played every game.
Fleury gives up so many rebounds it looks like ping pong.
Then you have a coach who changes lines every 2-3 shifts.
They don't shoot the puck enough at all. Ovechkin is shooting 10+ shots a game. Hello..wake up Penguins.
Guys like Kennedy, and Letang and Caputi shoot any chance they get, and guess what they score. Crosby acts like a figure skater and spins and twirls and passes right to the other team.
Trade...Whiteney, Satan, and Staal if need be. Open up some cap space, and play the younger players.
Fleury needs to go as well, he damn sure is not playing like a 5 million a year goalie.

Satan is not the problem, Therrien is. He wont even give Satan much playing time. Therrien doesnt match lines well at all either.
Whitney...hell he tripped over imaginary cracks in the ice 3 times yesterday.

Goligoski is pretty good, but he isn't consistent enough to be on a team that is competing every night. Pens probably feel more confident in Whitney now to log more minutes and take over the powerplay again.
Pens could definitely use someone like Chris Neil though, and I could see Kennedy going at the deadline. Look for the Pens to also try and acquire Bill Guerin or Keith Tkatchuk at the deadline...

Satan scored 2 goals in 20 games. Look for him to be a healthy scratch a lot for the rest of the season.
We have too many offensive-minded defensemen. Get rid of some for some solid power wingers. This season is lost already. Shero said he won't make any moves at all. The team was just not put together right after the mass exodus of key utility players.

The Penguins are in serious talks in a trade for Nik Antropov from Toronto. He would be a good pick up, and a big physical player.
Dont be surprised if we see St Louis come to Pittsburgh either.
We need someone who can skate with Malkin and Crosby.

Possibly one of the most overrated players in the league + he's a free agent in the summer. Unless they trade a couple of minor leaguers & low picks it'll be a waste.
St.Louis would be a good pick-up, though. He's signed for the next 2 years @ $4M/yr. which is reasonable for a player that puts up points like he does.

Knowing the Pens, we would probably trade Letang and a first-rounder for him.

Gonchar has been cleared to play!!!!! And the pens have a solid win over San Jose, hopefully this can fuel a turnaround.

I don't expect Gonch to play that effective for atleast 4-6 weeks. He won't get the warm up games in Wilkes-Barres, as they are just throwing him into the main stage.

Just having Gonchar on the ice will help. He won't be a full speed, and he is still a very smart player, and isn't prone to mistakes like Whitney is.
Antropov may be overrated, but if we trade him for Whitney it frees up almost 3 million in cap space. Something to think about.
