View Full Version : Antonio Margarito vs. Shane Mosley - Jan. 24

ILL BILL v2.0

After Margarito walked away from the fight last week, it's back on now. Golden Boy and HBO sweetened the deal for Margarito and his promoters, Top Rank. Predictions?

P.S. This is the same night as Affliction II.

margarito has trouble with people bigger or the same size as him. Very good fight I still say margarito. Margarito/Hopkins would be good too.

So would Valuev-Hopkins!

Come on, lets try to remain a little realistic in our matchmaking. Or has the Pacman-ODLH match-up fried your brain? There are weightclasses for a reason.

This is a pretty good fight for free(I know HBO isn't free but you get the point). I'll DVR this and order the Affliction PPV.

I'm taking Margarito by late stoppage. He is just too big and too busy for Shane to overcome. Shane will win the early rounds but by round 5 or 6 the tide will start to turn and Margarito will grind out a 11th round referee stoppage

Yea i'm surprised they put this on regular HBO and not PPV, maybe it was to avoid head to head PPV with Affliction even though just having the same date is messed up and weird. I'm doing the same, dvr this and ordering Affliction.

As for this fight, i think it's a much better fight than people think. Mosely is still fast and he doesn't gas in the later rounds and 147 is his home weight, where he belongs. I expect Mosely to box early and take most of the early rounds much like Cotto did and if you don't think he's watching that fight over and over to learn from Cotto's mistakes you're crazy. Don't expect Mosely to sit around and take body shots like Cotto did and don't think Mosely isn't aware that Margarito has a granite chin, i expect him to go to the body early and often to slow Margarito down later or at least enough for him to survive a late onslaught or prevent one. Mosely could win this fight with a smart gameplan because Margarito's weakness is his lack of speed and Mosely has plenty of that. Should be a great competitive fight and i'm giving Mosely a much bigger shot than most. Not saying i'm picking him to win, i'm still up in the air, but he'll do well and i don't think he'll get stopped.

Mosley doesn't make down and is taking the fight to Margarito himself. Mosley leaps in and just misses with a left hook. Mosley lands an uppercut, then digs to the body. Fantastic combo by Mosley. Margarito complaining about headbutts. The men lock arms and unload with their free fists. A flush left hook gives Margarito something to think about. Margarito smiles and marches forward. Margarito lands a jab and Mosley flurries. Good round for Mosley.

Dan Rafael's score: 10-9, Mosley
Darius Ortiz's score:10-9, Mosley

Round 2

Both men exchange jabs to begin the round. Margarito leaps in with a jab but Mosley shuffles out of the way. Mosley investing in the later rounds by working Margarito's flanks. Mosley might be the shorter man but he's jabbing on equal terms with Margarito. A mean right hand followed by an uppercut gets Mosley's attention. Now it's Margarito's turn to work the body. Mosley is warned for using his head just before the bell.

Dan Rafael's score: 10-9, Mosley
Darius Ortiz's score:10-9, Mosley

Round 3

Mosley is now throwing the right off the jab. A fight breaks out in Round 3. Both men exchange bombs before Mosley clinches. Both men doing a lot of work in the clinch. Mosley backs out and goes to wirk with his jab. Margarito lands an uppercut then complains about a headbutt. Mosley shrugshis shoulders. Margarito seems a bit distracted. A pinpoint right hand to the head by Mosley stops Margarito in his tracks. Mosley fighting a smart fight: He backs out of the range of Margarito's jab, then leaps in when Margarito stops punches. Both men trading bombs in the center of the ring as the bell sounds.

Dan Rafael's score: 10-9, Mosley
Darius Ortiz's score:10-9, Mosley

Round 4

After three rounds, Dan and I have it 30-27 Mosley. Margarito ducks a jab and just misses with a hook. Bernard Hopkins screaming orders from the third row. Margarito using a bit more head movement so Mosley goes back to the body. Mosley doing his best to stay off the ropes. Another energy-sapping body blow. Margarito throwing but not really landing. Another pair of body blows by Mosley. Mosley lands a right hand, then locks up. Smart move. Margarito desperately tries to make room. A straight right lands flush for Sugar Shane at the bell.

Dan Rafael's score: 10-9, Mosley
Darius Ortiz's score:10-9, Mosley

Round 5

Margarito trudging forward but Mosley is using his jab to disrupt his flow. Margarito lands glancing blows and Mosley ties up. A counter left hand stops Margarito in his traps. Mosley is just moving too much. This is vintage Mosley. Mosly leaps in, misses and ties up again. Margarito just can't get any work done. Mosley's confidence keeps rising. A counter left hand wings Margarito around. Mosley actually looks like the stronger fighter. Mosley just too fast and too sharp.

Dan Rafael's score: 10-9, Mosley
Darius Ortiz's score:10-9, Mosley

The WW division is a huge mess, similar to the HW division. I still don't think Mosley can beat Cotto and Margarito would get murdered in a rematch. No clear number 1 IMO

Williams needs to fight Mosely and Cotto needs to fight Margarito again. Winners face off to determine a true #1. But of course Mayweather is in the picture now and talks between him and Mosely are underway. If it falls through though then they need to do this.

He's in talks with mayweather, but it's not set in stone, and anyone relevant imo. Berto is my guess as they were previous going to fight until the wbc forced berto to fight collazo(which was totally justified), and mosley continued talks with margarito.

Some kind of padding that harders in his wraps when wet? They made him re-wrap before the fight like 3 times. In the local news I heard that it some wrapping that when it gets dry after being wet in turns into some kind of plaster. I remember that Tito Trinidad used that in his fight against BHop.

Did he used those in the Cotto fight?? I'm not sure, but he was probably hitting Cotto with concrete gloves. No wonder he dismantled him so badly (if it is true).

I'm not doubting Margarito's skills, I was rooting for him in this fight, and also I used to admired him back in the day when the big stars didn't wanted to fight him. This is a huge let down for me. Because he was never involved in big fights before, IMO Cotto and Mosley are only his two mega fights. And being caught now, it sucks so much.

Now, I will throw this in case you want to debate Cotto and Mosley against Margarito, why Cotto lost and why Mosley wins. Cotto was getting hit with those upercuts from round 2 on in their fight, shane barely got hit clean in this fight at all. Sugar was way too aware of those body shots, and he was aggressive in their fight, Cotto in the other hand was being cautious most of the time, letting Margarito set his pace and being compose every single second of the round. Shane is just more durable than cotto and had a much better gameplan than cotto did. I hope that Cotto wins this time against Margarito in June and in Dec Mosley vs. Cotto 2

Who would be the selling point of Berto/Mosley? Berto is coming off an average performance, and Mosley has never really been much of a draw. They could sell out the Staples centre because they had a great "latino" name to draw with.

Call my a pessimist but I can't imagine he gets caught using those wraps the only time he has ever tried.

Yea it was some kind of plastic that hardens when wet. I'd bet all my money he had it in the Cotto fight. I'll agree Mosely was a better style match up and had a better gameplan than Cotto. But Cotto was whooping Margarito early in that fight. It wasn't just uppercuts that did him in, it was body shots that just about put a stop to Cotto's movement later in the fight. I think minus the bullshit we all know Margarito had in his gloves, Cotto wins that fight clearly because those shots wouldn't have been nearly as effective and at worst Cotto makes it to the end without that much damage and loss of cardio and wins a clear unanimous decision. I want that rematch ASAP.

IMO, PBF tools Mosley to a UD, but it would be veery interesting right now to see what happen, with PBF inactivity and Mosley dominant performance over MargaCheato.

Now Im pumped for Cotto vs. Mosley 2, I hope that Cotto is a heavy underdog in that fight, might be the first time that I would bet real money.

^^Likin the new nickname^^ lol

I think Floyd fights Mosely. I don't see Shane winning but with his new smart trainer he chose to align himself with, i think he could give Mayweather serious issues if he uses a lot of body work. Mosely can take a shot and Mayweather isn't a big puncher so he might eat a couple to land a couple and i think he would win those exchanges. Hell i'm giving Mosely a shot the more i think about it.

Yeah, I was looking forward to Margarito setting himself up as the man to beat in the division, now thats all gone down the toilet.

Incidently I put a bet on a 9th round stoppage; unfortunately it was on the wrong man! Damn.

'Plaster-like substance' found on wraps

LOS ANGELES -- Welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito was forced to re-wrap his hands before Saturday night's defense against Shane Mosley at Staples Center after Mosley trainer Nazim Richardson discovered an abnormality during the pre-fight inspection.
"It was a plaster-like substance," Golden Boy Promotions attorney Stephen Espinoza told ESPN.com. "It was bagged up by the commission and taken as evidence."
Espinoza said that Dean Lohuis, co-executive director of the California State Athletic Commission, said it was discovered under both of Margarito's wraps.
Margarito's camp could not be reached for comment.
Richardson originally had objected to the amount of tape on Margarito's hands and when it was removed, the foreign substance was discovered, Espinoza said.
Richardson, who trains Bernard Hopkins, had also objected to Felix Trinidad's hand wraps before their historic 2001 undisputed middleweight championship fight. Trinidad was forced to have his hands re-wrapped and Hopkins went on to knock him out in the 12th round to unify titles.

I'm glad they took it to investigate now let's hope something right is done about this crap, at least clean the sport a little or make it look like an effort to clean it some.
