Ok, so what is everyone asking for this year? I ask this for a reason. I have tweaked my back a few times when doing some back lifts. I know that 99.9% of them were more than likely just really shitty form, but.... do weight belts actually help when used properly? Could someone in my situation (non pro, lifting to get bigger, better shape) use one? I see some guys at the gym use them, but they are also the guys who wear them while doing seated forearm curls on the bench... Worth the money? worth asking Santa for one?

I have one but only use it on my heavy sets of deads and squats. It's definitely worth the money as ong as you realize that it doesn't replace proper form, which I'm sure you already know.
what kind of lifts have you been doing when you hurt your back?
rocketman766
11-16-2008, 04:43 PM
The only ones that I have hurt from were deadlifts and bent over rows. I dropped the weight on the deads and do my absolute best to keep proper form. I am still scared of the bent over rows....

when you're deadlifting does it hurt when you're lifting the weight off the floor or when you're lowering it? Are you using double overhand grip or an over, under grip?
rocketman766
11-16-2008, 04:55 PM
was using double overhand...now alternating over/under. I would feel the pull/pain when I got the bar about knee high....about where my back begins to straighten up.

I guess you wouldn't have nay way to record yourself so we could give you a tip on your form...
you shouldn't really be pulling with your back, but more pushing out with your hips.
Try to put your feet under the bar and line it up so that your shoulder blades are over it. Make sure your hips aren't too high and that your weight is back on your heels. You want to look straight ahead (not up or down) and push out your chest. when you're set push up with your heels and as you raise the weight push out with your hips instead of pulling with your back. Oh and make sure you squeeze your glutes!! they are the main muscles used when straightening your leg so put them to use.
To me it sounds like you might be pushing more with the ball of your foot and pulling with your back instead of pushing with your hips. Give that a try with just the bar for a few reps and then slowly add weight.

Rocket- I have fractured three vertebrae in my back and I NEVER lift without a belt. I used to use a neoprene back brace but I lift too much weight for that to do the trick anymore.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/gl/harbelt.html
This badboy comes with me every time I go to the gym. I don't wear it to do stomach, calves or most of my triceps lifts, but everything else get the belt. I HIGHLY recommend it bro. It's just not worth getting hurt especially when you can get one for $20.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/hooker.html
I also use these for my deadlifts, shrugs, Tbar, upright rows and dumbbell rows. I'm not going to let my back or shoulders lose out on reps because my hands want to give out. I also get too many spasms in my hands when I don't use straps and it effects me when I type or play guitar.

Ok, I think I could use one so I will add it to my X-mas list.... As far as the hooker...( I love that name for the hooks/straps..) listed above...I bought those exact hookers about 4 or 5, maybe 6 months ago....use them all the time except for once lately, and I paid for it...

I use a belt for almost all my back exercises, as well as squats, military presses, anything when the weight is heavy and your back could potentially become compromised
It DEFINATELY helps, and its the safest way to go, IMO
Get a nice, sturdy leather one
I bought a used one off Ebay

Same here. Not sure if it would be too much on my knees with the running but then again, I don't do much running. Would be cool though when doing pull ups and squats and possible even the elliptical.

Yeah right now I hang 25 weight plate from some chains around my waist for my pull ups. I need to get a heavier weight to hang, but the other weights I have don't hang so well.

I bought a dip/pull up belt from Bodybuilding.com a while back and it's great. I'm at the point where I am doing working sets with a 45lb plate for pull ups and two 45lb plates for dips. I recommend looking into one. Pretty cheap on there.

I've been using the 17 kg KB for some time now; and don't have near the strength that I see you have (45lb plates for dips and chins...impressive).
It sounds like you'll need at least the 24 or 32 KG kb to get any real benefit from prolonged sets of swings/ presses/ getups/ lunges/ onelegged deadlifts/ highpull-toss-catch-squat/ snatches.

I figured I'd probably have to try a few out. At least Sports Authority has them so I can go there one night a feel them out. Based on your info I'll definitely try a few different weights before making a purchase.

try rack deadlifts instead of full deadlifts, i noticed them less strenuous thann full deads even though the weight is higher

i would advise using a full range of motion for 80% of your lifts
the only time I would advise doing range of motion specific exercises is if you are trying to work through a plateau of soem sort
harder it is, the better it is for you

I'm looking for some rings/straps to be able to hang from my pullup bar to be able to do dips from. Does anyone know of anywhere to find something like this. I've seen some, but they include the pullup bar and whole "system" which makes them extremely expensive. I'm just looking for the handles and straps to hang them from.

True, but you can't stick to rules like that when you're working with injuries. Rocket has a history of back problems so certain things have to be modified.
I too have a long history of back problems. Deadlifts with a straight bar cause a ton of discomfort and really leave me stiff for a few days. I started doing my dead lifts with dumbbells now and I'm right back into the swing of things.
Never assume that someone is doing something wrong or half assed untill you know their reasons. Better life lesson ;)

Deadlifts with a straight bar cause ME discomfort and leave me stiff for days
thats what they are SUPPOSED to do
he didnt indicate any issues with his back
I would stress however, that shying away from exercise will typically make an injury WORSE, not better
Obviously, this doesnt apply all the time, but you need to strengthen the area for it to get better, IMO

I think I may have figured ONE of my problems out...not warming up before lifting. Part of being a novice lifter still, I was not warming up. I am having better luck now that I use a lighter weight to warm up, but still put the belt on my xmas list ( it was the first thing listed!!!!!) I have definitely learned the difference between the good hurt and the bad hurt...

warming up is CRITICAL
If youre gonna push your body, you need to make sure the engine is warmed up and ready to go
PLEASE take your warmup as seriously as you do your lifting
somewhat rapid, LIGHT weight exercises will get you warmed up quickly
good luck

I agree...I would suggest everyone warm up first.
I am very guilty of not doing this myself. Sometimes I tell myself "you don't have time to warm up in real life situations, so why do it now?"
Bad way to think though....should warm up.

I have used pretty much the same warmup for the last 4-5 years.
10 minutes on the elliptical-Really wakes you up and gets the blood flowing
2 sets of light pull downs
2 sets of push ups leaning on a bench
1 high rep set of lateral raises w/ 10lb bells
I also do a minute or so of streches
WAY less injuries.
buffdaddy444444
11-19-2008, 03:49 PM
I just start doing REALLY light exercises of whatever muscle group Im doing that day, and gradulaly increase the weight
so for example
on cable back rows
start off with a 100, then do sets of 15 reps with 120, 140, 160, 180
then do sets of 200, 230, 260 and the reps begin to decrease and dont go near failure as I go over 200
this warms me up good for what I consider to be my working sets
works like gravy train
FA-Qer
11-19-2008, 04:10 PM
At LEAST one set at 50% one rep max for 20 reps on my first few lifts.

Last night I was doing shoulders
so I did, in pretty quick fashion
four sets of seated presses using the bar
two sets using 65 lbs, 2 sets using 85 lbs, 2 sets using 105 lbs, 1 set using 125
THEN
started my working sets
point being, if youre trying to run a race car at its highest level
you dont bring it out in 33 degree temperatures and hit the pedal to the floor
doesnt work that way, and its a recipe for DISASTER
